In Săpânța, Maramureș, Peri Monastery houses a 78-meter wooden church dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, among the tallest in the world.

Peri Monastery stands in Săpânța, in northern Maramureș, Roumanie, within the Livada dendrological park. Its silhouette is unmistakable: a wooden church whose spire rises to approximately 78 meters, making it one of the world's tallest religious wooden structures. The site, reconstructed at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, extends a monastic history stretching back several centuries, intimately tied to Roumanian Orthodoxy and Maramureș culture.

Why visit Peri Monastery

  • An exceptional wooden church: 78 meters tall, dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, a masterpiece of Maramureș carpentry craftsmanship.
  • An active spiritual site: the monastic community lives and celebrates Orthodox liturgy here, continuing a centuries-old tradition.
  • A well-maintained natural setting: the Livada dendrological park combines sacred architecture with a wooded environment conducive to contemplation.
  • A logical stop to complement the renowned Happy Cemetery of Săpânța, located in the same village.

A history of reconstruction

Peri Monastery's history is marked by a long interruption. The original establishment, situated on the opposite bank of the Tisza River (now in Ukraine, at Hrușovo/Peri), was destroyed in 1703 amid the political and religious upheavals that swept through the region. For nearly three centuries, the site ceased to exist as an active monastic community.

At the end of the 20th century, a refoundation project took shape on the Roumanian side, in Săpânța. The new monastery was built in the Livada dendrological park, not far from the historic location. Construction continued into the early 21st century, creating an entirely new complex, yet deeply rooted in Maramureș architectural tradition: wood, multi-tiered roofs, soaring spire.

The main church, dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, stands as one of the world's tallest wooden churches, reaching approximately 78 meters. This height is more than just a record: it embodies the characteristic verticality of the region's wooden churches, several of which are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

What to see on site

Saint Michael the Archangel Church

The monastery's flagship building. Its oak timber frame, shingled roof, and soaring spire illustrate the technical mastery of local craftsmen. The interior, more modest than its exterior suggests, houses an iconostasis and contemporary frescoes, in keeping with Orthodox canons.

Monastic buildings

Monks' cells, refectory, secondary chapels, and reception buildings form a coherent wooden and stone complex. Part of it is accessible to visitors, provided you respect monastic life.

The Livada dendrological park

The monastery is set within a park planted with varied tree species. Pathways allow for a peaceful walk around the site and offer excellent views of the church and its spire.

Liturgical moments

If your visit coincides with a service, you may attend Orthodox chanting, remaining discreet. The feast of Saint Michael (November 8th) is a high point in the monastery's calendar.
