Cosau Valley
Nestled in the heart of Maramureș, Cosau Valley brings together three villages — Breb, Sârbi and Budești — where wooden churches and traditional water machines endure.
Cosau Valley stretches across northern Roumanie, in the heart of Maramureș, and comprises three villages that have remained removed from the main tourist routes: Breb, Sârbi and Budești. You'll find a rare concentration of hand-carved wooden gateways, larch-built churches, shingled barns and hydraulic installations still in use. Rural life there follows in part an older rhythm, aligned with the agricultural seasons and religious celebrations.
Why visit Cosau Valley?
Maramureș ranks among Europe's regions where vernacular wooden architecture and rural crafts have best withstood communist collectivization and subsequent modernization. Cosau Valley distils this heritage over just a few kilometres, without the curated feel of a reconstructed village museum. Farms are inhabited, workshops function, and the waters of the Cosau river still power a handful of wooden machines.
Several reasons warrant a half-day to full-day stop:
- Three villages with distinct characters, linked by a narrow, easily traversable valley.
- Traditional hydraulic installations still used by local residents.
- A wooden church inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list at Budești.
- Welcoming family-run guesthouses, often paired with tastings of local produce.
