To travel to Roumanie, nationals of the European Union do not need a visa. They can enter the country with a valid identity card or passport.

Other citizens whose passports are officially recognized by the Roumanian state must obtain a visa or transit visa from the diplomatic or consular representatives of Roumanie abroad. To obtain a visa, they must demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover the duration of their stay in Roumanie.

For complete and up-to-date information, you can consult the website of the Roumanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The national currency is the LEU (LEI in plural). It is advisable to always carry cash in lei with you, in case payment by bank card is not possible.

You can exchange your foreign currency in exchange offices or at banks. US dollar notes issued before 1992 are difficult to exchange. Make sure the notes you wish to exchange are in good condition (no stamps, not too worn, no tears, etc.).

Payments

Roumanie has not yet adopted the euro. All payments are made in local currency (the LEU).

You can pay in cash or by bank card at certain merchants, especially in large supermarkets and petrol stations.

To exchange euros for local currency, you can use the exchange offices of banks or other independent exchange offices (in Romanian: casa de schimb). Make sure the commissions are zero!

The exchange rate is approximately 5 LEI per 1 euro.

Bank Cards

Visa and Mastercard are accepted by most hotels, restaurants and shops. You will generally be asked to present your passport. However, it is recommended that you check in advance which type of card is accepted by the merchant.

ATM (Cash Machines)

The network of automatic teller machines is expanding rapidly. Depending on the bank that owns the ATM, as well as your own bank, there may be a daily or weekly limit on cash withdrawals. Check with your bank before you travel.
