European Capital of Culture in 2007, Sibiu unfolds its Saxon squares, its eye-shaped dormer windows and medieval charm in the heart of Transylvania.

Sibiu, one of the largest cities in Transylvania, was founded in the 12th century by Saxon settlers established in the region (Hermannstadt). The city retains its medieval atmosphere to this day.

On the Great Square (Piata Mare), the city's heart since the 16th century, stands the Council Tower, one of the city's iconic symbols. The nearby building served as the meeting place for the City Council. Next come the Small Square (Piata Mica) and Huet Square, where the first ring of fortifications was constructed.

Sibiu was also designated European Capital of Culture in 2007.
