Sighișoara
Sighișoara
A Saxon citadel and UNESCO World Heritage site, birthplace of Vlad the Impaler: Sighișoara is one of Europe's last inhabited medieval fortified cities.
Sighișoara (Schässburg in German / Segesvar in Hungarian) is an imposing town whose fortified center sits atop a hilltop overlooking the Great Tarnava valley. The medieval citadel, founded by German settlers in the 12th century and rebuilt from the 13th century onward following the devastating passage of the Tatars, remains exceptionally well preserved and still inhabited.
Sighișoara belongs to what the Germans called SIEBENBURGEN (the 7 fortified cities—also the name Germans used for Transylvania).
Sighișoara resembles a traditional village stepped from a medieval tapestry. The Citadel, houses in Bavarian style, and shops all seem frozen in time. It is one of the most beautiful and captivating destinations in Roumanie.
